CryptoPrevent “Upgrade Installations”
All Premium Edition versions will automatically update to the latest versions of the software. (This includes v6.x and earlier, which are known as the “Automatic Update Editions” instead of the current terminology of “Premium Editions”) In fact, we’ve received notice from a user updating an old/unused installation of v4.x that was successfully updated to v8.x without issue, and within one single update process (rather than an update that updates to previous version which may then update to the current version.) We also know the process will work the same with v9.x as well.
Due to our large CryptoPrevent user-base, as we roll out new versions of the software we may often perform a “controlled roll-out” over the course of several days to a week, depending on the size of the update. We do this in order to lighten the load on our servers and ensure that no one has trouble receiving the update. In other words, not all copies on earth will update at the same time!
If you just can’t wait, you can always download the latest version’s install files and perform an “upgrade installation” (i.e. without first uninstalling the existing software.) Simply start the process by downloading the most current installation file below (note this is the same download available from the main CryptoPrevent page.)
The Upgrade Installation Process
It is NOT necessary to uninstall previous versions of CryptoPrevent prior to the installation of a current version. You may do so if you wish, however the current setup process will upgrade necessary components and convert existing configuration settings (which would otherwise be lost if you first uninstalled the product.)
To start the Upgrade Installation, do not uninstall the previous version, instead simply run the installation file that you downloaded above. This will be named similar to CryptoPreventSetupV[x].exe (where “[x]” indicates the current major version number, e.g. “CryptoPreventSetupV9.exe”)
Potential Issues with Upgrade Installations
While we haven’t received any reports of issues when upgrading to current versions (since v8.x/v9.x) there is one known exception documented in the example below.
Should you discover any additional issues, please contact us with the details.
Please see the CryptoPrevent Troubleshooting FAQ for more.
Issue: When email alert features are enabled in the CryptoPrevent v7.x Premium Edition (the paid product license) then shortly after you start CryptoPreventSetupV[x].exe you may see the screen below:
Simply select the second option “Do not close the applications” and click the Next button.
(This file is no longer used in v8.x and above, and will be deactivated from starting again upon restarting your PC after installation.)
Note: IF you rush through and click Next without first selecting the second option, the installation will appear to stall for a minute or more as it attempts the first option to “Automatically close the applications” at which point it will fail to do so, and you will receive an additional prompt that the service could not be stopped. Though the message can be concerning, this is OK and will not affect the installation beyond stalling it a few minutes. If you receive this prompt, simply proceed by selecting the following option to ignore the file and continue with the installation.
Soon you will see this small screen:
This screen indicates that your existing configuration settings are being updated to the current format, and after this process you will be prompted to restart your PC to finalize the installation. (Although v8.x is pictured here, newer versions should be similar in appearance and terminology.)
After your PC restarts, you may launch CryptoPrevent from the desktop icon or Start Menu to verify your settings, and have a look around.
